Glen Ladies - New Members Welcome

Glen Ladies - New member Welcome

Welcome to the Glen Golf Club, North Berwick
The aim of this document is to answer many of the questions that you may have, and help to make you feel at home at the Glen. We would like you to enjoy yourself and play a full part in being a Member of the Club. If there is anything we can do, please do not hesitate to let us know. A full list of the current Officers and Club staff is shown in the front of the Club Diary.

The Club and the Course

You have most likely played or at least seen the course before. In 2006 we celebrate our centenary – we will be 100 years young!

Conduct and Etiquette

To help all Members and Visitors to enjoy their golf at the Glen we must demand high standards of conduct and etiquette. The Club rules and regulations can be found in the Club Diary.

There are so many rules and myths surrounding golf clubs, it is understandable that many people are put off playing a fuller role at their Club, or simply do not dare join. Here are a few basics which everyone assumes that you will already know, but rarely take the trouble to tell you. We hope that it will make you feel confident that you are doing things right and help you feel more at ease in your Club.

In the Clubhouse

·         Please wear smart casual golf attire at all times.

·         Remove your hat and do not wear golf shoes.

·         If you bring a visitor, sign him/her in to the Visitors Book (located near the bar) and remember that you are responsible for your guests’ behaviour at all times.

On the golf course

·         To avoid creating unsightly divots and pitch marks, never use a lofted club on or near to the practice putting green.

·         Please restrict your practice to the practice ground situated between the 15th and 16th holes.

·         Please do not hit more than one ball around the golf course, as this will result in unnecessary wear and tear in these areas. This is afterall the function of the practice ground.

·         Always stand level with or behind the golfer playing a shot, never in front.

·         Do not play a shot until the golfers in front are out of range.

·         If you play a shot and you think your ball could hit somebody, shout “FORE!” as loudly as you can. Better safe than sorry. We have all done it!

·         Please restrict your golf to the yellow (gents) and red (ladies) tees, unless you are playing in a Club competition which tells you otherwise. If you have a special reason to request play from the white medal tees, please contact the Club Secretary in advance of your round.

Pace of play

·         It is a strange fact of life that very few people admit to being poor drivers, bad husbands, or slow golfers. The R&A have at least tried to help with the last of these sensitive issues and have printed clear rules that must be enforced. The R&A consider them to be so important that they place them at the very front of their Rule Book.

·         Players should play without delay.

·         If you have to start looking for a lost ball CALL THE MATCH BEHIND THROUGH IMMEDIATELY. Do not wait five minutes before doing so.

·         Two ball matches have precedence and shall be entitled to pass any three or fourball match.

·         A single player has no standing and should give way to a match of any kind.

·         Any match playing a whole round is entitled to pass a match playing a shorter round.

To speed up your play try the following:

·         Mark cards on tees, not greens.

·         Clear greens immediately. Place your trolley/bag at the exit of the green.

·         Walk briskly to your ball.

·         Walk to your ball, not your partner’s ball first.

·         Think about your next shot as you approach the ball.

Course care

On the tee

·         Do NOT replace divots as these may slip during the next golfers swing.

·         To avoid unnecessarily damage to the tee do not take practice swings or take your trolley on to the teeing ground.

On the fairways, semi and rough

·         Please replace divots, even if you are in the rough.

·         Follow paths where marked.

In bunkers

·         Rake bunkers after use, leaving the rake near the centre of the bunker.

·         Where no rake is available, do the best you can with a club or your foot, and report the missing rake on your return to the clubhouse.

On the green

·         Repair all pitch marks with a proper pitch-mark repair tool (see diagram).

·         Never drop the pin down on the green, as it may damage the green.

·         Replace the pin carefully and leave it standing straight.

·         Take care not to cause scuff marks with spikes shoes, and never take bags or trolleys on to the green.

  1. Insert repair tool just outside the back of the pitchmark.
  1. Do NOT pry up the depression as it exposes the soil and delays recovery.
  1. Pull the turf toward the centre of the mark.
  1. Do NOT insert repair tool and twist it as this breaks more turf loose.
  1. Repeat on remaining three sides.

  1. Gently tap required area with putter.

General

·         Please use the litter bins provided.

·         Please show courtesy to other golfers at all times by remaining quiet or still particularly if you think that you may be within the line of sight of golfers putting out on a nearby green.

As a veteran of several New Member Evenings, we have identified a number of recurring questions, which we have tried to answer below.

Tee-time bookings

Q:        Do I need to book a tee-time when I want to play?

A:        Yes. Always book a time before coming to the course.

Q:        How do I book a tee-time?

A:        Either phone the Starter (01620 892726) or go to the Starter’s box.

Q:        How far in advance can I book?

A:        For weekdays (Monday to Friday) the Starter can usually help you up to two weeks in advance. Beyond that date make an advance booking with the Office (Kevin or Rita).

BUT if you want to play at the weekend you can not book until 08:00 on the previous Tuesday. If you are playing a Glen GC matchplay tie, please explain this when you are booking a time.

Club information

Q:        How do I know what’s going on at my Club?

A:        Notices covering course issues, social functions and general information are shown in the clubhouse near the bar. Competition draw sheets are shown in the respective locker rooms. The website is also an excellent way of keeping in touch with developments. We also have a number of binders located near the trophy cabinet which show the minutes of meetings, details of local Open competitions, our policy on the management of young persons and of course the suggestion book.

Q;        How would I raise any complaints, concerns or suggestions that I have to improve our Club?

A:        Issues which are straight forward and easy to resolve should simply be brought to the attention of a Member of staff who will be happy to help. Minor complaints can also be handled in this manner, although it is important to remember that a Member may never directly reprimand a servant or officer of the Club.

More serious complaints should be made to the Secretary. Whilst the Club Constitution highlights that all complaints must be made in writing, we would simply ask common sense to prevail.

We continue to encourage Members to let the Management Committee have your views on any subject of importance to you. This is the only way that we can gauge your opinion of our running of the Club.

The suggestion book should be used purely for constructive suggestions for the improvement of the Club. The Management Committee will debate these issues and respond accordingly. If your suggestion affects a larger group of people, such as the Juniors, Seniors or Ladies sections, then we would always encourage debate amongst the sub committees responsible for those sections prior to a submission to the Management Committee.

Handicaps

Q:        I do not have a handicap. How do I get one?

A:        Play 3 rounds over this course and get the cards signed by a responsible person. Each card should be marked “FOR HANDICAP”, dated and signed by marker and player and passed to the Handicap Secretary (Men’s section) or placed in the box in the ladies locker room (Ladies’ section). If you have had a previous handicap you should notify the Handicap Secretary, even if this was some time ago. To maintain your handicap your should play in 3 qualifying competitions within the golf  year which runs from 1 February to 31 January.

Q:        I already have a handicap, but with another club. Is this OK?

A:        Yes. Let us have a handicap-certificate and we will add you as an ‘away player’ to our records. You are then obliged to inform your home club of any competitive scores returned at this club. If you feel that you will play more competitive golf at this club, then you may wish to appoint the Glen as your home club. If so, please ensure you let your other golf club know that they are now your away club.

Q:        My handicap is lapsed. What do I do?

A:        You must play three competitive rounds each year to maintain a national handicap. If not, your handicap will lapse, which simply means that you can no longer compete, although you can of course continue to golf. If your handicap is lapsed, please simply return three more cards to our Handicap Secretary.

Competitions

Q:        How do I enter a competition?

A:        The entry sheet is placed on the notice-board about four weeks in advance. Clearly write your name and handicap on the sheet provided. If the sheet is full, put your name on the reserve list. If you need to withdraw from the competition, please stroke through your name.

Q:        How do I know when I will be tee-ing off?

A:        The draw is made and placed on the notice-board about two days before the competition. A copy is passed to the Starter. You should phone the Starter (01620 892726) to check your tee time.

Q:        How much does it cost to enter a competition?

A:        Generally £1.00 - £2.00. This covers your entry fee, which is distributed to the winners in the form of vouchers. You may elect to enter the sweep and magic twos competition. This is entirely optional.

Q:        I can’t make the competition: what should I do?

A:        Phone the Starter immediately so that we can find somebody to take your place and re-arrange the draw if need be. As a matter of courtesy you should also phone the members you were drawn to play with.  If you withdraw from a medal after the draw has been made, you will have to pay a fine, which will be collected at the next medal.

Q         What do prize winners receive?

A         Vouchers are given as prizes – usually, for the Ladies section, 2 vouchers a scratch and a handicap for each division.  Many shops in North Berwick, including  the Glen golf shop accept these

Q         What is the code for the toilet by the 9th hole?

A         C1906X

In summary, we hope that we have given you every encouragement to play a full role at your Club, and help us to continue to improve the facilities for everyone. Please let us know whether this document has been helpful, or whether it could be improved ahead of next year’s New Members’ Evening.

Thank you
