...few holes in Scotland can match the 13th, the Sea Hole." Ronan Rafferty
If there was a golf course in Scotland that deserved worldwide praise for its entire set-up - and not just the golf course - then this is it ... the Glen is one golf course that every Scottish golfer should make a point of playing at some time in the near future." Bunkered magazine
... the East Links at North Berwick, home of the Glen Golf Club ... is a delightful links course which enjoys panoramic views and offers a round of spectacular golf ... it is one of the most under-rated and best-value courses in Scottish Golf." Golf Monthly

 FRASER EDGAR WINS EL CHAMPIONSHIP

Fraser Edgar of the Glen has won the EL Boys County Championship at a windswept but sunny Winterfield Golf Course. He scored two rounds of 70 for a 140 total which won best scratch. Fraser currently plays off 8 handicap but he beat several other lower handicap boys to record a great win. He also had the best net score of 124 but the handicap trophy was won by Callum Currie with a net 132. Scott Young won the Boys under 14 handicap trophy with a net 62 after a countback with Roddy Main. The best scratch U14 was Ben Stirling with a 75. Best Under 12s were William Ladbroke with 44 points and Thomas Neden with 42 points. The Girls Championships will be played later this year on a date TBN. The best Girls scores were Maggie Goodlad with 37 points and Joanne Free with 36 points. The CSSs were as follows:-  U18 Boys AM 65, U18 Boys PM 65, U14 Boys 64, U12 Boys Stableford, 40 points (61) Girls 37 points (67). Photos will be available in the Gallery soon. The event was again generously sponsored by East Lothian Council for whom Councillor Ruth Currie presented some of the prizes. Calum Richardson, the Captain of Winterfield, was also present to present some of the prizes. All the Players and Officials were well looked after by the Staff at the Club to whom we all owe our thanks for hosting this event.

AWAY SCORES  - REMINDER TO ALL PLAYERS 'PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CURE'

For the avoidance of doubt it is the player's responsibility to notify away scores for handicap purposes. Some clubs do it and some don't but this cannot be relied upon. We have a facility on the website to do so and the slips at the starters. The document on the SGU website under player's responsibilities explains the guidance and potential penalties for not doing so - para 8.10 et seq in particular.

So as we enter the main part of the golfing calander make sure you notify your away scores promptly and if you have competitions close together know how to estimate a reduction (or ask) and apply it.  However away scores must always be notified even if you can calculate it yourself and can work out you have hit buffer.

Finally the rules are there for all and I want to make sure we always apply the highest standards at the Glen to avoid any regrets later on.

JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP QUALIFICATION CRITERIA

  • There are 5 competitions designated as junior championship qualifiers (see below). The first rule is that you must have been a member and play in at least 2 of these competitions to be able to qualify for the junior club championship.
  • Although individual competitions are based on stableford points for junior club championship qualification it will be your best two (aggregated) scratch strokeplay scores from a possible 5 that will count. So the more competitions you play in the better chance you have of qualification by putting together two good scores.
  • As last year there will be A, B and C competitions. A will be best 8 aggregated scratch scores played off scratch over 18 holes until the final which is 36 holes. The B competition will be the next best 8 aggregated scratch scores although this will thereafter be played on a handicap basis (3\4 difference on handicaps at the point the draw is made) and players must have a Congu handicap (max 28) at the point the draw is made for the last eight. HANDICAPS WILL THEN BE FROZEN UNTIL AFTER THE FINAL HAS BEEN PLAYED. All matches including the final are 18 holes.  The C championship will be for players not in A or B. ENTRY TO B AND C WILL ALSO BE SUBJECT TO CONFIRMATION BY THE JUNIOR CONVENOR AND IS NOT EXPECTED TO BE FOR LOWER HANIDCAP PLAYERS.
  • You need to be available during week commencing Monday 20 June 2011 to play the quarter and semis and the final on Saturday 25 June 2011. If you are unable to play matches during this week you should let me know so that you do not take up a place at the expense of another player.

PROFESSIONAL COACHING

Coaching vouchers have been issued and some of you have already contacted Chris to arrange coaching sessions. A couple of things for the benefit of all. Chris has to travel to the Glen practice ground so it can actually be better for him if you arrange back to back sessions in twos or threes. He also has commitments professionally on Tour for his own golf and caddying for his father, often abroad, so a wee bIt more organisation and planning is required particularly as we head towards shorter days. Should you book a lesson in respective diaries and forget you will be expected to pay. The coaching scheme is provided by the members of the Glen and can only extend so far in terms of developing all our juniors. Parents may wish to consider supplementing this with further coaching sessions with Chris and should contact him directly (HIS MOBILE NUMBER IS ON THE VOUCHER FORM AND EMAIL ABOVE) should they wish to do so. Anyone who does not intend to make use of their vouchers should return them to me to enable them to be recycled to others.

Thanks

Jim
