An article provided by Alan McPherson. This is, perhaps, opportune in view of the sad news that our past-Captain, Jinty Kerr, passed away Wednesday, 31st August, following a long battle with the disease.
Eleven Glen members were amongst those who participated in a shotgun start Texas Scramble competition in aid of Cancer Research UK held on 28 August at Monksford House, a privately-owned course near Newton St Boswells. The competition had been organised by Glen member Alan McPherson and the other 2 golfers who are trying to raise funds for Cancer Research UK by playing every Scottish golf course – a formidable 623 in total at the last count.
As Alan commented “With the latest figures suggesting that cancer is likely to affect 1 in 3 Scots at some time in their lives, we were delighted that so many golfers from local clubs, and Glen members in particular, were able to support our efforts. The competition raised over £800 towards the charity, so thanks again to all those who helped and enjoyed the course. I’ve now played over 440 courses and although Monksford House has only 9 holes, it’s definitely one of the best parkland courses in Scotland. It was great that the owner of the course made it available to us. It’s not normally open to the public so it was a real treat to see so many local golfers enjoying the course, raising funds for our cause.
Alan and his friends hope to organise another fund-raising competition at Monksford House next year, so watch out for notices in due course.

Alan tells us that the Glen Men’s team (represented by Jim Edgar, Alan West, Ian Farquharson and Paul Whittaker) drew the short straw by starting their 18 holes at the 1st, a formidable 154-yard par 3 requiring absolute accuracy to steer shots over a deep ravine and through a narrow gap in trees (see picture). The Glen Ladies were represented by Amanda Edgar, Jill Whittaker, Polly McPherson and Jill Arnott, a guest player from Dunbar GC and the overall winners were that quartet of familiar faces at the Glen, David Lyall, Ian “Bomber” Brown, Tony Tan and Kenny Allison. David also won a couple of individual prizes for nearest the pin on 2 holes and his team won the top prize, a 4-ball game at Rowallan Castle, the new championship course in Ayrshire designed by Colin Montgomerie. David, Bomber, Tony and Kenny were representing the Rhodes, so they definitely have the clubhouse bragging rights going into this year’s Glen v Rhodes Team match, to be held on 2 October.
